Pets

Here is another post in my Conversation Ideas series.

Have you ever had a pet? (You could share about any pet you have or have had).

Is it common for people in your country to have pets? What kind? If you could have a pet what kind would you like to have?

Talk about special stores in our country where you can buy a pet and all the accessories for it. You could offer to take your friend to a pet store. Talk about obedience school for dogs. Also about specially trained dogs for the blind. Dogs can be trained to detect drugs.

Talk about the benefits of having pets. They can teach children responsibility, gentleness and give a sense of security and friendship. “Dog is man’s best friend” means that dogs are always loyal to their owner. The elderly also benefit from having pets. A pet is supposed to lower blood pressure. Perhaps share some special story or movie about animals.

Does the Qur’an say anything about animals? Our holy book, the Bible, has strict rules about how to treat and respect animals. Talk about humane societies in the West. (You could offer to show your friend a local humane society.) In our country animals have rights – not just people. Men have rights, women have rights, children have rights and animals have rights. (Share about some news item where a person is fined for mistreating an animal). Do you think there is a connection between how we treat animals and how we treat people?
